Allan Saint-Maximin has been ruled out of action until late January with a hamstring injury sustained during Newcastle United's 2-1 victory over Fulham last weekend.

The French winger was replaced by fellow attacker Callum Wilson in the second half as he struggled to cope with the physicality of the Premier League.

Saint-Maximin's absence is likely to have a significant impact on Newcastle's chances of securing a top-four finish this season, especially given their upcoming fixtures against Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool.

With the likes of Joelinton and Kieran Trippier also unavailable due to injuries, it will be up to Wilson and fellow attacking midfielder Ryan Fraser to fill the gap left by Saint-Maximin.

However, there may be some positive news on the horizon for the Magpies, with Saint-Maximin set to undergo surgery later in the week to repair the damage caused to his hamstring.

If successful, it could mean that he is back in training before the end of January,Primeira Liga Hotspots giving him plenty of time to recover ahead of the crucial run-in to the season.

In terms of the player's career, Saint-Maximin has made a strong start to life at St James' Park, scoring three goals in seven appearances since joining from Nice in the summer transfer window.

He has also impressed with his pace and technical ability, but the injury setback could potentially reignite questions about his future at the club.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle will look to bring in a replacement for Saint-Maximin in January, or if they can manage without him for the rest of the season. However, regardless of what happens, it is clear that the Magpies will need to find ways to replace his contribution on the pitch.
